When I stepped into Opera Bone and Joint Clinic in Malleswaram for my interview with Dr. Ponnanna K.M, I approached the meeting with the curiosity of a medical journalist and the skepticism that comes with years of reporting on healthcare. His interest in joint reconstruction led him to pursue a fellowship in Adult Reconstruction Surgery focusing on shoulder, hip, and knee conditions under Dr. Sachin Tapasvi in Pune, where he gained deeper exposure to arthroscopy and joint replacement techniques.
Further expanding his expertise, Dr. Ponnanna K.M was selected for the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Fellowship, training in Sydney in shoulder, elbow, and knee sports medicine as well as joint replacement surgery.
He later completed an additional AOA fellowship in hip and knee sports medicine and joint replacement at Concord Repatriation General Hospital in Sydney, where he trained under hip and knee surgeon Dr. Peter Walker.
These years of international training exposed him to modern orthopedic techniques including robotic-assisted procedures and minimally invasive joint replacement methods.
During our interview, Dr. Ponnanna K.M spoke about the evolution of orthopedic surgery and how surgical technology has changed patient outcomes. Before establishing his practice, he served as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Ramaiah Memorial Hospital and M.S. Ramaiah Medical College, gaining experience in treating complex orthopedic conditions.
In addition to clinical practice, he also contributed to academic medicine, working as an Assistant Professor at Ramaiah Medical College, where he was involved in teaching and mentoring orthopedic trainees.
His current work focuses on shoulder, hip, and knee conditions, particularly arthroscopy, sports injuries, and joint replacement procedures, including robotic and augmented reality-assisted knee replacement surgeries.
